The Schweinfurt run-of-river power plant is a run-of-river power plant on the Main in Schweinfurt, Lower Franconia . It is located between the Schweinfurt barrage and the Schweinfurt lock .

location

The power plant is located close to the Schweinfurt city center , at the DB  stop in Schweinfurt Mitte . It is located on the lock island , between the northern main arm of the Main, with the Schweinfurt barrage (see: List of Main barrages ) and a boat lock and the southern lock canal, with the Schweinfurt lock (see: List of Main locks ) and two outer ports (see: Ports of Schweinfurt ). Further south is the Saumain , a tributary of the Main. It serves as an emergency drain during floods .

history

The city of Schweinfurt has had the right to use the hydropower of the Main since 1397. Before the construction of today's power station and the barrage, there was a barrier 600 m upstream , the oldest roller weir in the world. Remnants of the drive mechanism are set up in a green area upstream, the prototype of the roller weir built in the Saumain has also been preserved. In 1904/1905 the first hydropower plant with 800 HP (590 kilowatts) was built. The power plant in its current form was put into operation in 1963.

description

The power plant was built as a result of the barrage expansion of the Main from Schweinfurt to Bamberg . This section was opened to traffic in 1962 as a large shipping route ( federal waterway ). The power plant went into operation a year later and has two Kaplan turbines with a total output of 3.8  MW . The owner is Mainkraftwerk Schweinfurt GmbH , in which Rhein-Main-Donau-Kanal GmbH holds 75% and Stadtwerke Schweinfurt 25% of the shares. The operator is Uniper .
