Laura di Santa Caterina da Siena Montoya y Upegui (born May 26, 1874 in Jericó , Antioquia , Colombia ; † October 21, 1949 in Medellín , Colombia) was a Colombian nun and the founder of the Congregation of Missionaries of the Immaculate Virgin Mary and Saints Catherine of Siena . She is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Laura Montoya y Upegui was the second child of Juan de la Crux Montoya and Dolores Upegui. At the age of two, she lost her father in the civil war and was raised by her mother and later by her grandmother. Laura began her teacher training at the age of 16 .

After graduating, she taught religion and wanted to join the Carmelites . During her time as a teacher, she had the idea of doing missionary work among the South American Indians as an "Indian woman". With four young women she moved to Debeiba in 1914 and settled with the Indians . The project met with considerable reservations in the established Christian community. She received support from the Bishop of Santa Fe de Antioquia , Maximiliano Crespo Rivera . As a result, the religious order of the "Missionaries of the Immaculate Virgin Mary and St. Catherine of Siena " was founded.

For the last nine years of her life, M. Laura was dependent on a wheelchair. After a long and serious illness, she died in Medellín on October 21, 1949. The congregation she founded is now spread out with around 500 religious sisters in 19 countries in America, Africa and Europe.

canonization

The beatification process was initiated on July 4th, 1963 by the Archbishop of Medellín and concluded in Rome with the beatification of Pope John Paul II on July 7th, 2005 . In a decree dated December 20, 2012, the Holy See confirmed that a miracle had been performed at the intercession of M. Lauras. The date of the canonization was set by Pope Benedict XVI. announced on February 11, 2013, at his last consistory . On May 12, 2013 Pope Francis M. canonized Laura , the first saint in Colombia. Her feast day in the liturgy is October 21st.
