Laurentius Autenrieth (* 1483 in Blaubeuren ; † February 17, 1549 ) was Catholic abbot of the Benedictine monastery Lorch near Schwäbisch Gmünd in Baden-Württemberg from 1525 to 1548 .

Life

Lawrence was the son of the Blue - Muller Conrad Uttenrieth (1447-1501) from Seißen born. His coat of arms therefore shows a millstone . Laurentius first joined the Benedictine order in Blaubeuren around 1500 and moved to the Lorch monastery around 1505 . In 1508 he became curator there .

In this function he participated as a scribe in the creation of the Lorch Choir Books and was the main scribe of the graduation manuscript in 1511/12. In his font sample book from 1520 he gave examples of different fonts.

He was subsequently elected prior of Lorch and in 1525 abbot of the monastery. During the Peasants' War , the peasant uprising that broke out again at Easter 1525 in Gaildorf (hence the name “Gaildorfer Haufen”) as a “Limpurgian Haufen” with around 3000 men to plunder the monasteries Adelberg , Lorch, Murrhardt and the Hohenstaufen fortress . The monastery was raided from April 26th to May 2nd, 1525 and partially burned down. The library was almost completely destroyed and the monks were driven out. Under Abbot Laurentius Autenrieth, the monastery was restored in 1530/31, but without regaining its former importance. Laurentius remained abbot even after Duke Ulrich von Württemberg dissolved the monastery in 1535 as a result of the Reformation .

In the south aisle of the church , his successor had a tomb with a Latin inscription built (translation): “Wanderer! In this tomb you have in front of you the bones of the very pious and excellent man Lorenz, father and abbot of the Lorch Monastery, who bravely stood up to the church separation of the Lutherans for 15 years with the highest spiritual power and endurance and learned to help the poor. Now he has gone to their common homeland as a faithful Christian and Catholic, after having headed the monastery for 24 years. He went home in the year of the Lord 1549, the sixty-sixth of his life, on February 17th. His soul lives on in God. Amen."
