The Protestant church in Bergen , which is named after its patron Laurentiuskirche , is a baroque church and a Hessian cultural monument in Bergen , the Bergen-Enkheim district of Frankfurt am Main .

Origin and development

In the Middle Ages, Bergen did not have an independent parish, but the place belonged together with Enkheim and Seckbach to the parish of the Kirchberg parish . It is named after the Kirchberg church , first mentioned in 1210 . The Gothic church, which according to historical reports is the largest in eastern Frankfurt, was demolished around the middle of the 18th century. The church was located in the Seckbacher district not far from Bergen and Enkheim on today's Wilhelmshöher Straße.

In Bergen the rascals of Bergen had their own chapel . The Gothic Hubertus Chapel was formerly on the corner of Marktstrasse and Steingasse. The rascals joined the Reformation and temporarily made their chapel available to the Lutheran Christians of Bergen. The building was destroyed in a fire in the middle of the 16th century.

Bergen, which originally belonged to the county of Hanau-Munzenberg , had been reformed since 1597 . The County of Hanau-Münzenberg fell to the County of Hanau-Lichtenberg in 1642 , whose counts were Lutheran. Since then, Lutheran parishes have formed again in the county of Hanau-Münzenberg. Since they did not have their own house of worship in Bergen, but the Kirchberg and Enkheim churches remained Reformed, the Reformed services took place in the town hall until their own church was built.

A plot of land in the so-called royal court within the former city fortifications was chosen as the building site for the new Berger Church . Construction of the church began in 1683. On August 10, 1684, it was consecrated and dedicated to St. Lawrence . A temporary tower from the time it was built was replaced by a 29-meter-high stone facade tower in 1741–1743. Since the Hanau Union at the beginning of the 19th century, the dual church structure with a Lutheran and Reformed church was also obsolete in Bergen. The regional church was now united .

During a renovation in 1912, the building walls on the eaves side were raised by 50 cm and the windows were changed. Air raids as part of the air raids on Frankfurt am Main in March 1944 damaged the building, which was repaired after the end of the war. From 1960 to 1962 a community center was built in the immediate vicinity, which was given direct access to the church. In 1966 a new ceiling was put in and the west gallery was lowered to the level of the organ gallery. The floor in the chancel was covered with sandstone and the interior was given a new coat of paint.

The Evangelical Church Community of Bergen-Enkheim is the only Evangelical community in Frankfurt that does not belong to the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau , but to the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck .

architecture

The plastered baroque church with a three-sided choir has a stone-faced facade tower with a hood in the west. The four-story tower ends with a slate-clad helmet. The two-story, baroque tiered tower roof is crowned with a ball, cross and weather valve. The nave with a polygonal end of the choir is divided by seven windows. The interior is characterized by the three-sided gallery and the historic organ prospect in the east above the altar .

Furnishing

Most of the furnishings come from the construction period. The pulpit from 1684 consists of a basket that rests on a herm , which may represent Moses. On the three sides of the choir are the elders stalls, which were made of ornate wood paneling.

The organ front with angels making music was created in 1695. In 1912, the church received an organ from Ratzmann , 1967 by an instrument of GF Steinmeyer & Co. has been replaced. This organ still in existence today has two manuals and 22 stops . It was renovated and rebuilt in 1994 by Andreas Schmidt .

The Berger Church has four bells. Two bells were confiscated in both world wars in 1917 and 1942.
