Laurian ( Latin Laureanus , Spanish Laureano , * around 480-490 in what is now Hungary , † July 4, 546 in Vatan , Berry , Franconian Empire ) is a saint of the Catholic Church.
Life
Laurian was born in the Roman province of Pannonia during the time of the Ostrogoths to noble yet pagan parents. He came to Milan as a young man , was converted to Christianity through the influence of a relative and baptized by Bishop Eustorgius II . Afterwards Laurian was trained as a deacon .
The persecution of the Arians led him to Seville , where he was Archbishop of Maximus from 522 to 539 . It was the time when the Arian Visigoths ruled Seville (and Spain). Against reprisals, Laurian adhered to the Catholic faith and the Chalcedonian confession of Christ. The persecution continued, however, and so he had to leave Seville in 539, fled via Marseille to Rome , where he was received and comforted by Pope Vigilius .
While visiting the grave of Martin von Tours , in the heart of the Berry , he was captured and beheaded by soldiers of the Ostrogoth king Totila . His head was sent to Seville as a message about the power of the Arians. Locals, on the other hand, saw the arrival of the relic as a sign of the end of a plague epidemic they had suffered that devastated the city.
Laureano was canonized by Pope Boniface VIII in 1297 .
In Spain (Seville), France (Vatan), Colombia (including Bucaramanga , Tunja ) there are churches and schools dedicated to San Laureano . There was a Mercedarians ' monastery in Seville , which has been devastated since church property was confiscated .
Adoration
Relics of Saint Laurian were buried in Bourges Cathedral and Seville Cathedral.
