Dirk Schaal

Dirk Schaal (born January 20, 1970 in Weimar ) is a German economic historian . Schaal has been head of the Central Custody and the University Archives of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg since 2019 and honorary professor at the University of Technology, Economics and Culture in Leipzig since 2015 .

Life

Schaal began studying history and German at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg , which he completed in 1997 with a master's degree . In 2003 he received his doctorate from the University of Halle with a dissertation on the beet sugar industry and regional industrialization. The industrialization process in central Germany, 1799–1930 as Dr. phil. His work was published two years later by Lit Verlag in the research series on the latest history as the fourth volume.

From 2003 to 2010 Schaal headed the historical archive of Südzucker AG and set up the historical archive and museum of the Polish subsidiary Südzucker Polska SA in Poland . Since 2011 he has been a consultant , later head, of the Saxon Industrial Culture Coordination Office at the Saxon State Ministry for Science and Art and an employee of the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony . As such, he accompanied numerous exhibitions on the subject of industrial culture . In April 2015 he received his appointment certificate as honorary professor in the Faculty of Media in the museology and archival studies course at the University of Technology, Economics and Culture in Leipzig. In the same month he gave his inaugural lecture . In 2019, Schaal moved to the Martin Luther University in Halle as head of the Central Custody and the University Archives .

His main research interests are economic and corporate history, especially the sugar industry and the electricity industry . Dirk Schaal is the author and editor of numerous specialist publications and co-author of the Neue Deutsche Biographie .
