Crown Vic is a thriller directed by Joel Souza that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 26, 2019 and was released in US theaters on November 8, 2019.
action
Nick Holland is new to the Los Angeles Police Department. On his first shift he is out and about with his experienced colleague Ray Mandel. It should be a turbulent night in the Olympic division. Ray and Nick are completely opposites. While Nick is a down-to-earth, self-proclaimed do-gooder straight out of a picture book, the divorced pessimist Ray has a penchant for disobeying rules.
During their shift, they are responsible for all sorts of incidents, from robbery to domestic unrest to car fires. That night they try to find a girl who was kidnapped by a group of drug traffickers while hunting two police killers. They are only protected in the dangerous streets of Los Angeles by the millimeter-thin sheet metal of their police car, a Ford Crown Victoria .
production
Film title and staff
The film got its title from the legendary police cruiser, a Ford Crown Victoria , or "Crown Vic" for short, in which Ray and Nick move through the nightly Los Angeles. The production of the Ford Crown Victoria was stopped after the model year 2011 after 20 years.
Directed by Joel Souza , who also wrote the script.
Cast and filming
Luke Kleintank plays LAPD newcomer Nick Holland on his first shift. Thomas Jane took over the role of the experienced police officer Ray Mandel, who was put at his side. Josh Hopkins plays Detective Jack VanZandt.
The shooting took place in Buffalo, New York State and in Los Angeles.
publication
The film premiered on April 26, 2019 at the Tribeca Film Festival , where it was featured in the Spotlight Narrative section. It was released in US cinemas on November 8, 2019.
reception
Overall, the film received mixed feedback from the critics.
Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter writes that despite its familiar elements, Crown Vic is a well-made and engaged film that shows the real talent of the writer and director.
Adam Patterson from Film Pulse says Joel Souza strikes a good balance between exciting action and droll patrol. The basic constellation reminds Patterson of the film Dragged Across Concrete by S. Craig Zahler , released in early 2019 , in which the characters spend as much time inside the police car as they do outside. Visually, the film looks excellent, the camera usually stays near the Crown Vic , but also shows the nightly activities in Los Angeles. Crown Vic is more than just a clone of Training Day , but rather a sometimes exciting police story, which conveys both the physical and emotional strain on the police officers who have to endure them when they move out in their patrol cars every night.
