Sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate is usually a mixture of isomers and belongs to the group of sulfonates . This chemical is one of the most important and powerful components in many cleaning products .

structure

Sodium dodec-4-ylbenzenesulfonate, an important component in the isomer mixture

The sulfo group is attached directly to the benzene ring . The position of the alkyl radical relative to the sulfo group varies. Structured sulfonates are called alkylbenzenesulfonates (ABS). In the case of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate, the length of the entire alkyl radical comprises 12 carbon atoms. Although the alkyl group is branched on the first carbon atom of the remainder, the compound is called linear alkylbenzenesulfonate (LAS). The historical reason for this is that earlier alkylbenzenesulfonates ( tetrapropylenebenzenesulfonate ) were used, which had highly branched alkyl groups and these were not sufficiently biodegraded . The figure on the left shows a component of the mixture that is also practically important.

Physical Properties

Sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate is a flammable, hardly inflammable, light yellow solid with a characteristic odor, which is easily soluble in water.

Biological importance

In terms of biodegradability, sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate complies with the surfactant regulation and the European detergent regulation ; However, long-lasting degradation products that are also toxic to fish remain.

use

Many sulfonates are used as surfactants , more precisely as anionic surfactants , especially in cleaning agents such. B. detergents used.
