Lauterbach is a desert near Volkmannsgrün in the urban area of Schauenstein in the Upper Franconian district of Hof .

The place Lauterbach was mentioned in a document in 1386 and 1388 when the estate of Schauenstein was sold by the Wolfstriegel to the burgraves of Nuremberg ; in 1393 it was owned by Heinrich Reuss von Plauen. Like other places in the area, it was devastated in the following years and not repopulated afterwards. In 1398 and 1402 Lauterbach was named as a desert. In feudal book of Viscount Johann of 1408 Lauterbach is, like Reuschen , no longer mentioned. The Lauterbachwiese corridor testifies to the location of the place. This was also confirmed by the two teachers and field name researchers Flechtner and Reitzenstein in 1935. There is no known stream in the vicinity that could have given its name.

The name Lauterbach seems to have been coined by mining, since the washing was carried out using a Lauter trough. In the region there is still a Lauterbach desert near Kirchenlamitz . Fragments and slag finds south and northeast of the desert are indications of mining activities. A mine for gold and silver, which was named in 1408 near Schauenstein, has not yet been able to be located in more detail, but could be connected to the adjacent “Goldberg”.

The place was located immediately north of today's state road St2693 in the direction of Neudorf . The corridors converging in a star shape are based on the old course of today's state road in the south. This old road , running in east-west direction, was a little further north compared to the current route and was more curved. To the east of the desert it is still recognizable as a filled ravine . The arrangement of the hallways and broken fragments finally made it possible to assign the desert. A number of finds are documented in Seehof Castle, the seat of the central monument protection authority. The area is protected as a ground monument D-4-5736-0023. In connection with the desert there is another old road running in north-south direction, which, coming from Schauenstein, leads directly south to Edlendorf ; Today it is mainly agricultural roads.
