The Lauterbach desert is a desert near the Upper Franconian town of Kirchenlamitz in the Bavarian district of Wunsiedel in Germany .

Lauterbach desert

The place appears in a document dated May 18, 1356, when the Epprechtstein reign was sold by the von Wild family to the burgraves of Nuremberg . The place was north of Kirchenlamitz, west of today's connection road St 2177 towards Hof . It is passed down as the field name Lauterbach and was located on the creek of the same name, which flows into the Lamitz as Sandlohbach . Other field names indicate the earlier tin mining . The name Lauterbach seems to have been coined by mining, when the washing was carried out using a Lauterbach. There is still a Lauterbach desert near Schauenstein in the region . Many of today's ponds have their origins in ore mining above ground.

The certainly only small settlement was probably built using the typical local wood and clay construction. There are various theories about the abandonment of the settlement. A decline in mining or the move of residents to neighboring settlements is possible. A connection with the Hussite incursions or, according to Rudolf Thiem, with the plague cannot be ruled out either. So far, no broken fragments have been found. In remembrance of the settlement, the Lauterbachstrasse in Kirchenlamitz is named.

Geotope tin trenches near Kirchenlamitz

The extensive mining area, which is mainly located northwest of the desert location, is now a geotope . Soap hills, dams and ditches are clearly visible. The mention of tin mining also in 1356 is the earliest mention of the Fichtel Mountains. The last references to mining activities near Lauterbach date back to the end of the 15th century or the beginning of the 16th century. A mining book of the margraves and the Berg-Historia by Johann Wilhelm Kretschmann report on this .
