action

Chloe Steele, a student at the University of Central Arkansas , flies home to surprise her father, pilot Rayford Steele. Her mother, Irene Steele, tells her that her father would not make it. Chloe meets reporter Cameron "Buck" Williams.

Rayford speaks to Chloe and tells her that he has to fly to London on short notice. The daughter Chloe has a problem with the fact that her mother has recently become a staunch Christian . Chloe suspects that her parents' marriage is no longer working. Her father is flirting with flight attendant Hattie Durham, and he's no longer wearing his wedding ring. Chloe knows her father is flying to London for a U2 concert, and she thinks he'll be spending time there with Durham.

Chloe goes to a mall with her brother, where he suddenly disappears. She only holds his clothes in her hands, frightened. She realizes that her brother wasn't the only one; Everywhere in the mall and outside there are empty clothes bags. She sees on TV that all over the world people are disappearing and driverless vehicles are causing damage.

The same thing happens on Rayford's flight. So disappear u. a. the copilot Chris Smith, the flight attendant Kimmy and all the children on board. Panic breaks out on board. A pilotless plane on a collision course damages Rayford's machine and he decides to return to New York . Chloe finds out that her mother has also disappeared. Pastor Bruce Barnes tells her that God removed all true believers from the doomed earth and brought them to Paradise. The pastor explains to Chloe his own whereabouts by saying that he himself is an unbeliever who did not believe in his sermons. Rayford now draws the same conclusions as the pastor and is now trying to at least land the plane with the remaining people safely.

Chloe, trying to commit suicide from a bridge, phones her father again. He asks her to help him. She manages to find a landing pad for the plane and clear it (a new highway that is still being built). Your father can land the plane safely and save the passengers. The world is on fire and he says it's the end of the world. Chloe tells him this is just the beginning.
