The women's 400-meter hurdles were held at the 1980 World Athletics Championships from August 14 to 16, 1980 in De Baandert Stadium in the Dutch city of Sittard .

Unfortunately, the world championship run over 400 meter hurdles was devalued by the short-term cancellation of the strong runners from the Soviet Union . These athletes lost the opportunity to become the first world champion at this distance or at least to achieve top positions.

The runners from the GDR recorded a triple success. Bärbel Broschat , former Bärbel Klepp , became world champion . Only a hundredth of a second behind, Ellen Neumann , later Ellen Fiedler, won the silver medal. Bronze went to Petra Pfaff .
