The Leichtlin prairie lily ( Camassia leichtlinii ) is a plant that for the genus of Camassia ( Camassia ) in the subfamily of the Agavaceae part (Agavoideae).

The Leichtlin prairie lily is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 20 to 130 centimeters. This geophyte forms onions with a diameter of 1.5 to 3 centimeters as persistence organs. The three to nine leaves measure 20 to 60 × 0.5 to 2.5 centimeters.

The flowers are radial symmetry . The tepals measure 20 to 40 × 4 to 10 millimeters and have five to nine veins; they lean strongly together over the ripening capsule fruit and fall off when the fruit is ripe. The flowering period extends from May to June.

The capsule fruits are 10 to 25 millimeters long, not pressed against the inflorescence axis and often fall off the stalk. They contain six to twelve seeds per compartment.

Occurrence

The Leichtlin prairie lily occurs in western North America from southern British Columbia via Washington to California . The species grows on moist meadows at altitudes of 600 to 2400 meters.

Systematics

One can distinguish between two subspecies:

  • Camassia Leichtlinii subsp. Leichtlinii : Her tepals are creamy yellow. It only occurs in Oregon .
  • Camassia Leichtlinii subsp. suksdorfii (Greene) S. Watson : It has blue-violet to bright blue tepals, its area corresponds to that of the species. The number of chromosomes is 2n = 30.

The Leichtlin prairie lily is rarely used as an ornamental plant for borders and perennial beds. It has been in culture since at least 1873. There are several varieties with purple or blue flowers. The flowers can also be double or semi-double.
