Leili Andre (born February 1, 1922 on the Mardi farm, then Soosaare municipality, now Viljandi district ; † October 4, 2007 in Kolga-Jaani ) was an Estonian poet and writer .

life and work

Leili Andre (real name Leili Jõesaar, until 1949 Leili Rimmel) was born the daughter of a shoemaker . She first attended the primary schools in Soosaare and Kolga-Jaani, and later the Progymnasium in Põltsamaa . After graduating from school, she received pedagogical training at the teachers' college in Tartu in southern Estonia . She also took correspondence courses in Tallinn .

Leili Andre made her literary debut in 1940 with poetry in the magazine Tuleviku Rajad . Together with Raimond Kolk , Kalju Lepik and Ilmar Talve , she was very close to the Tartu literary group Tuulisui , whose most prominent members went into exile with the Soviet occupation of Estonia . Leili Andre, however, stayed in Estonia and from 1943 worked as a teacher in various places.

After the end of World War II , it was mainly Lepik who published Andre's poems in Sweden . For this reason, Leili Andre's works were initially no longer allowed to be printed in Estonia. It was not until 1957, under the sign of de-Stalinization , that they could appear in the Estonian SSR . The first independent volume of poetry appeared in 1979 under the title Hõbedakirjaga kruus .

In the 1980s, Leili Andre was best known for poetry for children, which she called Kes selle tamme istutas? (1982) and Päike õunas (1985). Nature poetry includes the anthology Lumeliiliad (1989). In 1997 her late lyrical work was published under the title Ma usun kevadet .

Numerous poems have been set to music by Estonian composers, including Gustav Ernesaks , Eugen Kapp and Edgar Arro .
