Leo Luzian von Roten (born January 6, 1824 in Raron , † August 5, 1898 in Eischoll , resident in Raron and Sitten ) was a Swiss politician (Catholic-conservative) , editor and poet .

biography

Leo Luzian von Roten was born on January 6th in Raron as the son of the lawyer , district administrator and Zendenpräsident Hildebrand von Roten and Anna de Courten. After completing the colleges in Brig and Freiburg , von Roten devoted himself from 1846 to studying law at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , which he graduated in 1850. In addition, he passed the notary's examination in Sion in the same year.

He then worked as a legal advisor , and from 1860 to 1876 as an assistant to the state clerk. In addition, he worked from 1856 to 1878 as editor of the Walliser Wochenblatt, from 1869 Walliser Bote, and from 1864 as a teacher of German literature at the college in Sion. In the Swiss Army he served with the rank of major . He also emerged as the author of novellas, epics and dramas as well as the Valais anthem .

Leo Luzian von Roten, who remained unmarried, died on August 5, 1898 at the age of 74 in Eischoll. He was the older brother of the Catholic-Conservative Council of States and National Council member Hans Anton von Roten.

Political career

Luzian von Roten, party member of the Catholic Conservatives, held the office of mayor of Raron at the local level from 1850 to 1852 . At cantonal level he was represented in the Valais Grand Council from 1850 to 1876 and 1897 to 1898 , in which he served as a German clerk between 1856 and 1876, and in the Council of State from 1876 to 1897 . In addition, von Roten was appointed governor of the Raron district between 1897 and 1898 . At the federal level, he represented the canton in the Council of States from 1857 to 1859 . Leo Luzian von Roten was considered the leader of the Catholic-Conservative majority in Valais.
