Leonid Ivanovich Popov ( Russian Леонид Иванович Попов , scientific transliteration Leonid Ivanovič Popov ; born August 31, 1945 in Oleksandrija , Kirowohrad Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ) is a pilot and former Soviet cosmonaut of Ukrainian nationality .

Astronaut activity

After Leonid Popov attended the Higher Military Aviation Pilot School in Chernigov in 1968 , he was selected as a cosmonaut by the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center on April 27, 1970. After completing his basic cosmonaut training, he attended the Air Force Military Academy in Monino , which he left after successfully completing it in 1976. Popov was a substitute for the Soyuz 22 (1976) and Soyuz 32 (1979) missions , before he was first used in 1980 as the commander of the fourth regular crew of the Salyut 6 with Soyuz 35 . After a stay of almost 185 days, the pilot and flight engineer Valeri Ryumin returned to Earth with Soyuz 37 . His second flight into space led Popov as commander of the eleventh visiting team of Salyut 6 in 1981 with Soyuz 40 by a feeder ship. For the last time the pilot flew with Soyuz T-7 as commander of the second guest crew of the Salyut 7 space station ; the return was with Soyuz T-5 . On June 13, 1987, Leonid Popov resigned from the cosmonaut corps.

Military career

Popov attended the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR "KI Voroshilov" in Moscow , where he graduated in 1989. Shortly thereafter, in 1989, the pilot became head of the 4th Main Air Force Division in the Soviet Ministry of Defense. 1995 Popov retired from active military service. Since then he has held the rank of major general in the reserve of the Russian Air Force .

Popow is married and has two children.
