Leopold Grabner

Leopold Grabner (born July 21, 1802 in Breitenfurt near Vienna , † November 4, 1864 in Vienna ) was an Austrian forest scientist .

Life

Grabner came from a family that had been involved in forestry for several generations. After attending grammar school in Vienna, he completed philosophical studies at the University of Vienna . Around 1820 he went to the kk Forstakademie Mariabrunn , where he became an assistant in 1823 and stayed until 1827. In 1827 he was accepted into the forest administration of the Vienna Woods and quickly went through the first stages of promotion. He was forest over walkers, provisional foresters, Forest Inspectorate Schreiber and 1830 Forest Office engineer and appraiser of the Forestry Commission Purkersdorf . He was the first forester to implement the system developed by Johann Christian Hundeshagen .

Grabner returned to his training center in 1833 and was initially a provisional professor of natural history before he was appointed full professor of natural history in 1834 . In 1837 he was temporarily given the chair of forestry by Johann Schmitt before he was appointed full professor in 1838. In 1847 he followed a call from Prince Alois Liechtenstein , who entrusted him with the management of his forestry in the Liechtenstein Court Chancellery in Vienna and the title of forest adviser. Grabner made a contribution to the reform of the forest system as well as the reform of the teaching system in the forest sector. In 1857 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order . He retired after 1859 and died of complications from gout .

From 1853 onwards, Grabner was the editor of the Oesterreichische Vierteljahrsschrift für Forstwesen, published in Vienna .
