Leopold Heinrich Vöscher's interest in art was aroused in his youth by the landscape painter Anton Hansch , who located his talent in drawing , not painting . From 1846 Vöscher attended the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna , where he received his first prize in 1849. In 1851 he left the academy, broke away from Hansch's influence and turned to oil painting .

He exhibited for the first time in 1852 at the Austrian Art Association and was particularly successful with critics and audiences in his early days. His handling of the aerial perspective and the effect of light and shadow were valued. From 1859 to 1863 Vöscher undertook extensive study trips , especially in the Alps , which were his preferred motifs. These took him to Switzerland , Northern Italy , Carinthia , Carniola and Hungary as well as to the Salzburg , Tyrolean and Bavarian Alps.

He moved to Munich in 1864 . In the Kunstverein Munich , he often had exhibitions. His later works were criticized by his contemporaries for technical weaknesses and manners. After ten years in Munich, Vöscher returned to Vienna. Diagnosed with incurable insanity , he died in 1877 in the Lower Austrian insane asylum on Brünnlfeld in Vienna.

In 1958 the Vöschergasse in Vienna Inzersdorf (23rd district) was named after him.
