Leopold Pollak , also Pollack (born November 8, 1806 in Lodenitz in Bohemia, † October 16, 1880 in Rome ) was an Austrian genre and portrait painter.

Life

The painter August Riedel

Pollak came from a Jewish merchant family. His parents sent him to the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague to study painting , where he was tutored by Joseph Bergler . He then worked at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Johann Peter Krafft and Anton Petter and, from 1831, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . Pollak moved his center of life to Rome in 1832 or 1833. Evidently, from 1855 to 1860 he had a studio on the first floor at 33 Via Margutta , a small alley where many artists were housed. His painting style was influenced by August Riedel , whom Pollak portrayed in Rome in 1851. The album of the German Art Association in Rome contains a number of portrait drawings by Pollak's hand. A portrait that he made of Wilhelm Leibl in 1869 was auctioned in Lucerne by Galerie Fischer in 1945.

His son August Pollak (* 1838) was also a genre and portrait painter.
