Leopold Woitsch

Leopold Karl Woitsch (born October 20, 1868 in Ottensheim ; died June 6, 1939 in Vienna ) was an Austrian sinologist .

biography

Leopold Woitsch received his doctorate in astronomy in 1893 . From 1903 to 1908 he worked at the Austrian consulate in Tianjin and at the Austrian embassy in Beijing , where he learned Chinese and Manchurian . After his return to Austria in 1909 he was appointed private lecturer for Chinese language and taught Chinese language and literature as well as Manchurian. He studied the Chinese, Manchurian, Tibetan and Mongolian vocabulary ( lexicography and lexicology ) as well as the poetry of the Tang Dynasty . He dealt e.g. Some with similar subjects as Erwin Ritter von Zach , and some of his writings were sharply criticized by Zach. Woitsch made a number of suggestions for improvement to the dictionary by Herbert A. Giles , which were also taken into account in a new edition.

Due to his professional isolation in Vienna, Woitsch was unable to publish many of his works. His manuscripts are in the Austrian National Library, including an edition of Liaozhai zhiyi , a Manchurian textbook (based on the Qingwen qi meng請問 啓蒙 / manju nikan hergen-i cing wen ki meng bithe ᠮᠠᠨᠵᡠ
