Leopold von Ubisch

Leopold von Ubisch (born March 4, 1886 in Swinoujscie ; † July 26, 1965 in Paradis near Bergen , Norway ) was a German-Norwegian zoologist .

Life

Leopold von Ubisch was the son of the Prussian officer and director of the Berlin armory Edgar von Ubisch and his wife Anna, nee. Goldschmidt. After High School in Berlin , he studied law and received his doctorate in 1908 in Heidelberg to Dr. jur. He went on to study science, which he u. a. at the University of Rostock , which he graduated with a doctorate in 1912 . As a front-line fighter, he took part in the First World War and was decorated several times. After completing his habilitation in Würzburg in 1919 , he became an associate professor there in 1924. In 1927 he was appointed professor of zoology at the University of Münster and did research on embryology and developmental physiology.

After the transfer of power to the National Socialists , he was affected by hate speech and boycott actions by the Münster students, but was initially not dismissed as a front-line fighter in accordance with the exception provision in the law for the restoration of the civil service . As well as some of the professorial colleagues, especially the lecturer Heinrich Jacobfeuerborn incited against him, he settled in 1935 as emeritus . Then his wife Gudrun Stephansen Norwegian had emigrated to in 1935 with the sons Hans (* 1914), Jörgen (* 1916) and Otto (* 1919) for Norway and he was able to German occupation of Norway in 1940 at Marine Biological Laboratory mountains work. He lived in the village of Paradis near Bergen. Even during the war, one of his works was printed in the German Reich .

After the war he resumed his work in Bergen, and research stays in Naples and Heligoland took him ; he refused to return to the chair in Munster for political reasons, as he considered the anti-Semitic prejudices of German students and professors to continue to be effective looked. In 1954 he became a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

His older sister, the Heidelberg biologist Gerta von Ubisch , emigrated from Germany in 1934.
