The Gallo-Roman site of Les Couvents

Les Couvents is an archaeological site from the Gallo-Roman period in the French commune of La Chapelle-Montbrandeix in the Haute-Vienne department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region . It was designated as a Monument historique on August 22, 1979 .

location

The site is located in the municipality of La Chapelle-Montbrandeix, not far to the right of the D 64 from La Chapelle-Montbrandeix to Dournazac , about 2.5 kilometers east of the town center, on Lieu-Dit Les Couvents near the hamlet of Les Varognes .

geology

The subsoil of the site is built up by Augengneisen from the Lower Gneiss Cover (LGU) of the northwestern Massif Central .

description

Only stumps of the wall remain of the former residential wing, which are interpreted as a Gallo-Roman villa . There are also the remains of a racing furnace , in which iron ore was smelted in the first half of the 1st century , and a ceramic furnace . Excavations at the site between 1969 and 1985 revealed several ceramic remains that are now kept in the town hall (Mairie) of La Chapelle-Montbrandeix.

Ceramic finds

A deep bowl, a food ball, two saucepans, a terrine and two pots were found. One of the pots dates to the 1st century, as confirmed by very similar finds in England ( Colchester ), in Switzerland and in the Var department . The terrine is more recent and dates from the second half of the 2nd century, with analogous finds from Belgium , Germany and Switzerland. There is a comparable find in Périgueux from the years 50 to 80. The deep bowl can be assigned to the first half of the 1st century and, based on comparative finds from Nages-et-Solorgues (Gallic oppidum) and Roanne, even extends into the Time of august back.
