From the beginning of the 1970s, lesbian research emerged mostly outside of universities in the context of self-organized political-theoretical groups and projects without any significant institutional or financial security. The vast majority of studies in this area were initially prepared as examination papers or dissertations , but without lesbian research becoming a recognized direction of academic research and teaching at German-speaking universities . Accordingly, can be found in the emerging since the mid-1990s, programs for gender studies and gender studies occasionally lectures on topics of lesbians research. As a specialist conference , the “Symposium on German-speaking Lesbian Research”, which is held at irregular intervals, offers a forum for the presentation of new research and for content-related and professional exchange. The autonomously organized event has no fixed location and was held in 1991 ( Berlin ), 1993 (Männedorf near Zurich , organized by the Sappho Association for the Promotion of Women's Research Projects), 1995 ( Hamburg ), 1998 (Berlin) and 2000 ( Bielefeld ) .
