Lesley Blanch

Lesley Blanch (born June 6, 1904 in Chiswick , London , † May 6, 2007 in Menton , France ) was an English writer .

Life

Lesley Blanch attended St Paul's Girls' School in the London borough of Hammersmithuns from 1915 to 1921 , then studied painting at the Slade School of Fine Art until 1924 , where Rex Whistler and Oliver Messel also studied at the same time . Scene and costume design works from her subsequent collaboration with the director Theodore Komisarjevsky, who emigrated from Russia, were shown in the Museum of Modern Art in an exhibition of theatrical art in 1934 .

During her life she traveled almost all over the world, with a particular fondness for Russia, which she toured several times since 1932. Her essays, articles and travelogues have been published in many British magazines, including Vogue Britain (1937–1944), The Observer and The New Statesman . She has described her personal impressions, especially of the Soviet Union, in the autobiographical fragments Journey into the Mind's Eye .

Between 1930 and 1941 Blanch was married to the Englishman Robert Alan Wimberley Bicknell and between 1945 and 1962 to the French author Romain Gary .

In 1971 she summarized her travel experiences through Oman, Afghanistan, Egypt, the Gulf States to Uzbekistan, together with Eve Arnold , in a series of articles for the Sunday Times .

In 2001 she received the Order of the British Empire , in 2004 the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres .
