The Czech Letov Š-16 aircraft is a single-engine, two-seat biplane designed as a light bomber . The design of this type is based on experience gained with the Letov Š-6 .
History and construction
The first flight of the machine took place in November 1926. The construction was carried out by Alois Šmolík . The cell was made entirely of metal and covered with fabric. The landing gear was rigid and had a tail skid.
After the demonstration in Le Bourget , the model took part in several air races, in which the good flight performance attracted international attention. Latvia ordered 22 Š-16L machines with a Hispano-Suiza engine. On October 13, 1927, a world record was set with this type on the route Prague - Benátky - Říp - Prague over the closed 500 km distance with 1000 kg payload at 230.929 km / h by the then chief pilot of Letov, Alois Jezek.
The Czechoslovak Army ordered a total of 116 machines of the types Š-16 ( reconnaissance aircraft and bomber) and Š-16B (pure bomber). The Turkey ordered in 1929, 16 of these aircraft. A machine on floats was delivered to Yugoslavia as the Š-16J . Some of the machines remained in service until 1938.
In addition to the series variants, there were also some test models that were designated with a prefixed 100, such as the Š-116 (1928, Handley Page), Š-216 (1928, radial engine), Š-316 (1929, bow in sections with duralumin planked), Š-416 (1931), Š-516 (1930, conversion for record flights with a 588 kW W engine Praga Asso, including a partially covered landing gear, reached a closed distance of 1000 km with a payload of 500 kg 276, 3 km / h), Š-616 (1930, with Hispano-Suiza 12Nbr, 10 pieces made, 4-blade propeller), Š-716 , Š-816 (1932, Praga ESV engine). The Š-916 with a Lorraine-Dietrich engine remained just a project.
The Š-16 is the first Czechoslovak aircraft with an all-metal airframe.
