The Letov Š-19 aircraft is a single-engine biplane that was developed as a passenger aircraft for four passengers and one pilot. The first flight of the machine took place in 1924.

History and construction

The Letov Š-19 was manufactured in the Letov factory in Letňany near Prague in Czechoslovakia . The construction was carried out by Alois Šmolík . The landing gear was rigid and had a tail skid. The pattern is based on the design of the Letov Š-6 . The wings were braced and braced with N-handles.

The draft took place at the instigation of the Czechoslovak airline Československé Státní Aeroliniev (ČSA), then these machines in the years 1925 to 1927 mainly from Prague to Kosice started (Kosice). The closed passenger cabin was located directly behind the engine. It could be reached through a door on the top left of the fuselage and a fixed staircase. The open pilot's seat connected to the cabin, which was shifted to the left from the center of the aircraft.

First, the Maybach IVa engine of 191 kW was installed again, as in the Letov Š-6. Three machines were made with this engine. These showed defects in the structure and flight characteristics.

When the same powerful Walter  W-IV engines were available a short time later , another four machines with modified ailerons and improved wing bracing were manufactured.

The machines showed some shortcomings that stood in the way of further procurement. On the one hand, getting in and out of the car was very difficult for the passengers. Due to the close proximity to the engine, the cabin was very noisy. The pilot had a limited field of vision due to his seat far back. Ultimately, as a biplane, the machine could not achieve the flight performance of comparable foreign machines. That is why it remained with the seven aircraft of this type produced in total.
