The Letov Š-39 aircraft is a single-engine, two-seat high- wing aircraft that was developed as a sport aircraft .

development

The first flight of the machine took place in 1931. This type was manufactured by the Letov factories in Letnany near Prague in Czechoslovakia. The construction was carried out by Alois Šmolík . The landing gear was rigid and had a tail skid. The wing was braced and supported in the area of the landing gear. The engine powered a two-bladed wooden propeller . The wings, elevator and rudder were not arrowheaded and each had a rectangular outline. The machines were primarily used by aviation clubs.

The prototype was equipped with the 37 kW Orion LL-50. The machine showed very good flight characteristics. Due to the fixed slats attached to about half of the wing, the machine also exhibited excellent slow flight characteristics. A series of 23 machines was then launched, which were equipped with a Walter Polaris radial engine of 40 kW. These machines were manufactured in 1932.

Since the airframe was by far not exhausted by the engine, a prototype with a much more powerful Pobjoy-R engine was built in 1933 and the machine was named the Š-139. These attempts were also satisfactory. For the series, however, it was decided to use an equally strong Walter Minor  4 from domestic production. Since this was an in- line engine , the bow section had to be redesigned. The series machines had the designation Š-239.
