Lew Del Gatto

Lewis "Lew" Del Gatto (born March 27, 1941 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American jazz , fusion and studio musician ( tenor , baritone saxophone , bass clarinet , clarinet , flute ).

Live and act

Del Gatto began his career at Les Elgart and Sal Salvador , then played with Doc Severinsen , Clark Terry , Mel Lewis / Thad Jones and Chuck Israels and the National Jazz Ensemble , in the Johnny Carson Tonight Show Band, toured with Frank Sinatra and recorded with Cal Tjader in the late 1960s . He became known in New York from the mid-1970s through his participation in albums by the Average White Band , Elkie Brooks , Roy Buchanan , the J. Geils Band ( Monkey Island ), Chaka Khan , Jimmy McGriff , Liza Minnelli , John Tropea , Joe Thomas and Jim Steinman ( Bad for Good ).

From 1975 to 1979 and from 1985 to 2005 he was a member of the television band of the comedy show Saturday Night Live , where he also worked as an arranger; he was also a member of the Phil Woods Jazz Orchestra. In addition, he continued his jazz studies and had a. a. lessons from George Coleman . With musicians like Randy Brecker , Victor Lewis and Steve Turré , he recorded his debut album Katewalk for Naxos Jazz in 2000 . In 2008 the album Heroes was created with Don Friedman , Bob Cranshaw and Mickey Roker ; he dedicated the album To Al and Zoot, with Love to his saxophone models Al Cohn and Zoot Sims .
