Medium-sized cities Široki Brijeg

The Lištica [ ˈliʃtit͡sa ] is a river in Herzegovina , in the southwest of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the second coldest river in Europe.

Run

After emerging from a first source in the Čabulja Mountains, the river in the upper course is called Jasenica, takes on the name Lištica after merging with a second actual source (field name : Borak ) in Široki Brijeg , to after disappearing in a drainage hole ( Croatian : ponor ) in the former marshland Mostarsko Blato, underground course and reappearance near Mostar , again to take the name Jasenica and flow into the Neretva .

The Lištica has the following original natural course:

The Listica [sic] rises on the Čabulja Mountains, is nourished near the Siroki Brieg monastery by a second spring that springs from a gorge of the Černać Mountain, initially flows south, then east, and runs through the Mostarski-Blato swamp for a length of 2½ hours, and disappears under the high altitude connection of the Hum and the Nemačko Brdo west of Mostar. At Milković the river enters the Mostar plain, takes the name Jassenica, flows in a south-easterly direction and flows almost 40 paces wide not far from Buna into the Narenta . It is bridged with Siroki Brieg and with Buna. She takes on the left: the Černastica and Svatić, right: the coming of Gvozd Ugrovača and of Vrannić coming Brazovać . "

economy

The Lištica in Široki Brijeg

In 1868 the Franciscans of the monastery of Široki Brijeg built a water mill on the Lištica and in 1934 a small hydroelectric power station that supplied the town with electricity for the first time. In February 1945, the watermill became one of the scenes of the Široki Brijeg massacre .

Due to the low groundwater level and the lack of expansion of the water supply system, private cisterns in the surrounding villages are still supplied with the water of the Lištica. For this purpose, the water is filled into tank trucks directly at the source and transported to the customer so that it can be used as drinking water .

Others

The city of Široki Brijeg was renamed Lištica after the river in 1953 , so that the name Široki Brijeg no longer reminds of the temporary defeat and high losses of the Tito partisans in the battles for the city and region at the end of the Second World War and the local massacre could. After the end of Yugoslavia , the city was given its original name back in 1991.
