The Libertad is a three -master rigged as a full ship. She is a sailing training ship of the Argentine Navy.
General
The keel laying of the Libertad took place on December 11, 1953, almost three years later, on May 30, 1956, was the launch . The Libertad was built by the Argentine state shipyard AFNE Astilleros Navales . The commissioning took place on May 28, 1963. The home port of Libertad is Buenos Aires .
In 1966 the Libertad set a still valid speed record for the transatlantic crossing between Cape Race (Canada) and Dursey Island (Ireland): It covered the distance of 2058.6 nautical miles in 8 days and 12 hours.
In 1976 there was a collision with the Spanish Juan Sebastian De Elcano , who broke the jib boom. However, the Libertad was only slightly damaged.
The Libertad has won nine times, the "Boston Teapot Trophy". The prize is awarded every year by the Sail Training Association (now by Sail Training International ) to the sailing ship that - with over 50% of the crew in training - covers the furthest distance within 124 hours.
In 2006 the Libertad was completely overhauled; in addition to modernizing the technology, facilities for accommodating female cadets were also installed.
After the Argentina crisis , the Libertad only stopped at Latin American ports in order to avoid the ship being seized to settle open national debts . In 2012, ports in Europe and Africa were also visited. On October 2, 2012, the ship was detained in the Ghanaian port of Tema at the instigation of the hedge fund NML Capital ( Paul Singer ). As a result, the head of the Argentine Navy, Carlos Alberto Paz , and the head of the military secret service, Lourdes Puente Olivera , resigned. According to a ruling by the International Tribunal for the Sea , Ghana must release the ship because warships are subject to immunity under international law.

The total sail area of the Libertad is 2,643 m², spread over 27 sails. The sails from the 27 sails are divided into five headsails , double topsails , single head sails and royals .
