history
The ship was built in 1937 at the Companhia União Fabril (CUF) shipyard in Lisbon in just 62 days. The client was the fishing company Parceria Geral de Pescas Lda. On May 19, 1937 it was put into service as Creoula and was part of the so-called White Fleet until 1973 .
As a fishing ship , the Creoula was mainly used off Newfoundland and Greenland . The Grand Banks , the sea area off Nova Scotia, used to be abundant in cod, which was salted on board. The fishing was done with longlines from row boats, the Dorys, carried on deck . A fishing trip almost always lasted from April to September. She brought about 800 tons of fish, which u. a. into dried fish, the bacalhau , and 60 tons of cod liver oil. In winter the ships lay in port, were serviced and re-equipped.
After 40 years of service and around 300,000 nautical miles , the Creoula was launched in 1973 in Lisbon. After six years of negotiations, it was finally bought by the Portuguese Ministry of Fisheries in order to be converted into a fishing museum. During the work at the H. Parry & Son shipyard , it was noticed that the steel hull was in excellent condition. So it was decided to completely refurbish the ship and use it as a training ship for the fishing academy. Since its re-commissioning in 1987, it has been sailing under the ship identification UAM 201 with a permanent crew of around 40 marines and around 50 students from the fishing academy. In addition to the Sagres and the Polar , it is the third sailing training ship operated by the Portuguese Navy.
