Liborius Church

The Liborius Church is a Catholic parish church in the western center of the East Westphalian city of Bielefeld in the Mitte district , not far from the SchücoArena . It is part of the Bielefeld-Mitte pastoral association in the Bielefeld-Lippe dean's office in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

history

On May 1, 1958, the parish vicarie St. Libori was raised to an independent parish . It comprised around 1,800 members.

The first groundbreaking for the new church building designed by Bielefeld architect JG Hanke took place on October 25 of the same year by the Chinese Bishop Vitus Chang . The foundation stone was laid in February 1959. The bells could already be consecrated in summer. The church consecration followed on December 12, 1959 by Paderborn Archbishop Lorenz Jaeger .

In 1980 the community celebrated the inauguration of the confessional chapel and the Way of the Cross . The renovation of the church also began and was completed in 1981.

The church building was last extensively renovated in 2002.

Architecture and inventory

The ground plan of the church is an irregular hexagon . The width of the resulting space is deliberately underlined by the lighting design. The originally multi-colored windows were replaced by monochrome ones in 1988.

The baptistery, located under the tower, is decorated with three mosaics . The middle one shows Jesus Christ as ruler of the world; the right with Mary signifies his incarnation; John the Baptist on the left refers to his sacrificial death in the image of the Lamb of God .

In the center of the Marienkapelle there is a Madonna figure .

The sanctuary is adorned with a 7.9 m by 5.43 m high tapestry .

The Way of the Cross impresses with its haunting color scheme. Mourning and sorrow scenes were given darker colors, and more hopeful scenes were given lighter colors.

A statue of the church patron Liborius is located at the transition from the church to the choir . It is a replica of a figure created in the 18th century, the original of which is in the Paderborn Diocesan Museum .

The wood-carved Vesper picture (around 1860) is on loan from the museum.

Bells

The four bells of the church were cast in 1959 by the Bochumer Verein für Gusstahlfabrikation (BVG) .
