The Lichi Mountains ( Georgian ლიხის ქედი Lichis kedi ; Russian Лихский хребет Lichski chrebet ) or Surami Mountains is a mountain range in Georgia . The northern part is in the area of South Ossetia , which is de facto independent from the central government.

The mountain range connects the Greater Caucasus in the north with the Lesser Caucasus in the south. In the west is the Colchian Plain , while in the east the Kura drains the mountains to the Caspian Sea . The highest point, the Lochoni, reaches a height of 1926  m . The affiliation of some further north located peaks that reach over 2000  m height (including Bilurta 2166  m , Tadikussan 2205  m ) is controversial: Some of them are assigned to the Ratscha Mountains adjacent there , but on some maps also to the Lichi Mountains.

The mountains consist of granite , crystalline mica slate and tuff sedimentary rock. The mountain slopes are covered by deciduous deciduous forests.

The lowest point of the mountain range is the 949  m high Suramipass . In its vicinity, the Poti – Baku railway crosses the mountain ridge through the 4423 m long Surami tunnel , which was opened on September 16, 1890 . The national road Sch55 ( შ 55 ) Sestaponi - Chaschuri leads over this mountain pass near the village and fortress Surami . The international trunk road S1 ( ს 1 ) from Tbilisi to the Russian or Abkhazian border (on this section also European route 60 ) crosses a few kilometers further north under the 996  m high Rikoti Pass through the Rikoti tunnel ; an alternative route leads over the pass.
