Liebenburg

The Liebenburg , also called Liebenberg , is the ruin of a hilltop castle at 375.9  m above sea level. NHN high Schloßberg between the Namborn districts Eisweiler and Hofeld in the Saarland district of St. Wendel .

history

The castle was built around 1170 by the Counts of Castel to secure their possessions and was first mentioned in 1218 with "Boemund von Liebenberg", who was the feudal man of the Counts of Zweibrücken .

After the castle came into the possession of Archbishop Balduin von Trier in 1334 , it was destroyed in 1430 in a dispute between Ulrich von Manderscheid and Raban von Helmstatt about the Trier archbishopric and electoral dignity. In 1479 Heinrich von Sötern was enfeoffed with the castle, which was finally destroyed by the French in 1677 in the Dutch War and then served as a quarry.

In 1926 the first uncovering and excavation work took place on the small elliptical castle complex with a size of about 70 by 35 meters. In 1976 the keep above the cistern was rebuilt. Today it serves as a lookout tower and wedding room (April 1 to October 31).

investment

The round brick keep of the Liebenburg has a diameter of a good six meters, a height of 7.4 m, and stands at the highest point of the castle complex. A metal staircase with 32 steps leads along the outer wall of the tower to the 6.3 m high viewing platform , from which there is a very good panoramic view.

The complex also includes a tower, a building and a fountain .
