The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Our Lady is in Steinheid , a district of the town of Neuhaus am Rennweg .

history

The first church was consecrated in the then gold mining community Steinheid in 1507. The church was located near the market. Steinheid initially belonged to the parish of Schalkau . In 1532 it became an independent parish. The district of the parish comprised Siegmundsburg with Hifteberg as well as the settlements of Limbach , Grundmühlen , Lauscha and Glücksthal that were built in the region in the 17th and 18th centuries . Lauscha got its first church in 1732 and became independent in 1841. The localities in the neighboring Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt , Scheibe and Alsbach, were looked after by the church from 1740 to 1839, when Scheibe was given an independent parish.

A replacement building for the dilapidated church was built on the road to Steinach from 1789 to 1792 based on designs by court carpenter Horn from Salzungen and Veit Koch from Rodach based on the reformed church, today's Catholic Church, " St. Leopold ", in Hildburghausen . Duke George I paid half of the construction costs , the other half covered donations. The Liebfrauenkirche was consecrated in 1792. The nave had to be demolished as early as 1832 due to massive structural damage. From 1833 to 1835 the building was rebuilt, this time in massive construction, with the exception of the foundation walls and the tower, according to plans by the Ducal Building Inspector Johann Georg Buck. The form and structure of the previous building have been taken up again. The door and window frames and the foundation stone were taken from the previous building.

The north-south hall church has a nave with corner pilasters and a slate hipped roof . The door and window frames as well as the foundation stone with the Saxon diamond were taken over from the previous building. The church tower in the north has a Welsche dome and houses the sacristy . The simply designed interior has a flat ceiling with a stucco frame and is characterized by the altar and the pulpit on the north side, the two-storey galleries standing on pillars on the long sides and the single-storey organ gallery on the south side. On both sides of the altar there are boxes that belonged to the forestry and the Steinheid porcelain factory.

In 1968 Alfred Carl replaced the historicist painting in the altar area from the 19th century with a sgraffito depicting the life of Christ. The organ from 1791 was built by Johann Andreas Hofmann from Neustadt . In 1864 it was replaced by a new building by Christoph Hofmann and Sons. Three hard cast iron bells from 1953, cast by Schilling & Lattermann in Apolda , hang in the 22 meter high church tower.

Today the church has about 850 members. In addition to Steinheid, it also includes the villages of Siegmundsburg, Limbach, Neumannsgrund, Friedrichshöhe, as well as Scheibe-Alsbach and Goldisthal with their branch churches.
