The Liechtenstein family crypt in Vranov ( Czech Republic ) is located under the crypt of the Church of the Birth of Mary and belongs to the Paulan monastery in Vranov . 14 ruling princes of the House of Liechtenstein and 48 other members of the princely family are buried here.

history

Maximilian von Liechtenstein and his wife Katharina Schembera von Boskowitz and Černahora (Czech: Kateřina Černohorská z Boskovic) founded the Paulan monastery with its generously dimensioned pilgrimage church in 1633. Since then, the crypt has served as a burial place for the noble family. Charles I , the first Prince of Liechtenstein, was buried here.

The crypt turned out to be too small as a family tomb. The crypt on the terrace below the pilgrimage church was built in its current form between 1812 and 1815 in the Empire style. Since then, the complex has consisted of the "old" and the "new" crypt. Sculptures by Josef Klieber adorn the entrance corridor .

In 1945/1946 the Liechtensteiners were expropriated in Czechoslovakia. The crypt in Vranov u Brna is now administered by the Roman Catholic Church.

In 1960, a new princely crypt was erected near the St. Florin Cathedral in Vaduz , in which the last Prince Franz Josef II, who had died so far, was also buried.

Although the crypt is no longer owned by the family, Prince Hans-Adam II had it extensively renovated from 2012 to 2015. The renovated royal crypt in Vranov u Brna was reopened on November 4, 2015 in the presence of the royal couple.
