Liesa van der Aa (* 1986 ) is a Belgian actress, violinist, musician, singer, songwriter and composer.

Life and projects

Family, childhood, studies, first appearances and engagements

Liesa van der Aa is the daughter of the Belgian actor Frans van der Aa. She grew up in Antwerp and began taking violin lessons in 1991 at the age of 5. After the classical violin repertoire, she became more and more interested in new, contemporary sounds. She discovered Velvet Underground , Prince and Chet Baker for herself. Her desire to experiment increased and she began to compose for herself. She only used her violin, her voice, a sampler and lots of effects pedals . In 2006 she starred in two episodes of the television series En daarmee basta [And that's that] . In 2008 she completed her studies at the Herman Teirlinck Instituut in Antwerp in the minor arts course with the academic degree Master . In addition to her, Katrin Lohmann completed the same course in the same year. She later carried out joint projects with her. They were seen at the Festival Studio Villanella in the DeSingel art center in Antwerp. In the same year, Liesa took part in the album Akkatements of the Belgian band Het Zesde Metaal as a violinist and background singer . She played theater at the Toneelhuis in Antwerp, among others . She took on guest roles in various television programs , for example in KiekensDe Kotmadam , and  Hij komt, hij komt… De intrede van de Sint . She also wrote the music for the two short films Ijsland and Paroles by Gilles Coulier. Ijsland was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010 .

Louisa's Bolero

Louisa's Bolero is van der Aa's debut EP that she produced with Stijn Cole, who also did the backing vocals.

Louisa's daughter

Liesa van der Aa became the front woman of the band Louisa's Daughter . She sang and played the piano and violin. The band released the CD Hemixem in limited edition and gave several concerts in the following years. The band also participated in other subsequent music projects by van der Aas.

Berlin (woman) symphony

Liese van der Aa and Katrin Lohmann worked together with Susanne Franzmeyer as background singers on this radio play project in 2010 and 2011. Nadeshda Brennicke , Alexandra Marisa Wilcke and Joachim Witt took over the vocal part . For this radio play project by Michael Farin , nineteen young women were searched for and found in Berlin in autumn 2010 through advertisements. After a twenty-minute conversation in the recording studio, the women's statements were put into song structures. A studio band and the above singers then interpreted them as part of the radio play.

Zingaburia

From 2011 to 2014 Liesa van der Aa played the special 'Spacey' Van der Geyt in thirty episodes of the youth television series Zingaburia by Hugo Matthysen . The series is about four people who are traveling in a spaceship to the distant holiday planet Azifrikameropa . Her father Frans van der Aa had a guest role in the fifth episode of the second season, Klantersie, which aired on December 30, 2012. The series ended in 2013 after the third season.

Troops

Troops is Liesa van der Aa's solo debut album. It was produced by Boris Wilsdorf, the producer of Einstürzende Neubauten . The album was recorded in the recording studio of the Einstürzende Neubauten in Berlin . Liesa van der Aa recorded almost the entire album herself. She used the violin as a percussion instrument, creating noises, alienating the sound and creating a wide variety of effects. All album release concerts in Belgium were sold out. Then she was invited to the Gent Jazz Festival in June of that year . As part of 10 songs, 10 videos, 10 artists , Liesa van der Aa asked ten contemporary avant-garde artists to stage the individual songs and shoot music videos with her. This resulted in an unprecedented result. Marc Lagrange (1957–2015) directed the video for Louisa's Bolero, the director Gilles Coulier (* 1986) Our place, Guy Cassiers (* 1960) Troops, Frederik Jassogne (* 1984) Visitor, Ief Spincemaille (* 1976) Birds in Berlin, Sander van de Vijver Lou, Lea Vidakovic (* 1983) My love, Hugo Moens Into the foam, Joé Agemans and Stef Aerts (* 1987) (FC Bergman) Lost Souvenir and Geert Mul (* 1965) Low Man's Land. Knack Focus writes that the album shimmers contemporary classical music, cool jazz and artistic rock. It is characterized by its complexity and its stately panoramic sound. In 2013 she released a live album Troops Live At La Chapelle.

Mont Blanc

In 2013 Liesa van der Aa wrote music for the short film Mont Blanc by Gilles Coulier together with Johannes Genard. The film took part in the Cannes Film Festival in 2013

Where what's happening

On November 4, 2013 Liesa van der Aa released the EP Where what's happening on Volvox Music as VOL 1310. It contains the following individual tracks: A1 Nightclubbing, A2 Vanishing act, B1 Rid of me, B2 Paroles paroles. There are four covered songs. Johan Leysen as singer, Stijn Cole and Paul Kendall, who mixed the recordings, worked on the recordings .

Van den Vos

In 2013 the T oneelhuis, the Muziektheater Transparant, the soloist ensemble Kaleidoskop, in cooperation with the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam , the Kaaitheater, Le Phénix - Scène nationale de Valenciennes , the Wiener Festwochen , the Operadagen Rotterdam , the Stichting Theaterfestival Boulevard and the Berliner Festspiele / Foreign Affairs produced with the support of the cultural program of the European Union, support of the cultural program of the European Union Van den Vos. An adaptation of the epic Van den vos Reynaerde [About Reinecke Fuchs]. The text is by Josse De Pauw. Liesa van den Aa wrote the music for it with Daniella Strasfogel and Michael Rauter. The Antwerp theater collective FC Bergman was responsible for the conception and directed. After thirteen performances in December 2013 in the Toneelhuis in Antwerp, over twenty performances followed in the course of the following years at the above-mentioned partner theaters, festivals and other venues.

Feiten

As a member of the Ellen Schoenaerts Kvartets , van der Aa released the album Feiten in 2013 . In addition to Ellen Schoenaerts and van der Aa, the multi-instrumentalist Tijs Delbeke and the guitarist and drummer Ephraim Cielen played.

Cordon (TV series)

The ten-part first season of the Belgian-Dutch TV series Cordon started in March 2014 with Liesa van der Aa in the lead role as Jana Snyder . The plot revolves around a deadly virus infection in Antwerp. A second season started in 2016.

WOTH

WOTH (Weighing of the Heart ) is a triple concept album , also known as a triptych. It was released on November 3, 2014 at Volvox Music under VOL1501. It is based on the Book of the Dead of Egyptian mythology. On the first CD the themes of the album are processed electronically, on the second CD with baroque instruments and on the third CD in the pop format of the seventies. The producer was again Boris Wilsdorf and the recordings took place again in the recording studio of the Einstürzende Neubauten in Berlin. In contrast to the first CD Troops, around eighty musicians were involved in the production of the CD. On December 4th, 2014 the world premiere of a stage version took place in DeSingel. In addition to Liesa van der Aa, who sings and plays the violin, the ensemble also included eight musicians, including the musicians from Louisa's Daughter, Katrin Lohmann and a choir with 42 singers. A video installation designed by Frederik Jassogne and Guy Cassiers completed the performance. The project was a co-production by DeSingel , the Muziektheater Transparant , the Toneelhuis and the Handelsbeurs in collaboration with the Flagey cultural center in Brussels , the Hasselt cultural center and the Kaaitheater. It was supported by the Government of Flanders .

In the 2015 film Ay Ramon , Liesa van der Aa played the role of Mari Mortelmans .

Brussels

In 2017 she played the role of Charlotte Verne in five episodes of the ten-part television series Brussel .

American Lament

American Lament is a joint concert project between Liesa van der Aas and Tom Pauwels (* 1974), the guitarist of the Ictus Ensemble . First launched in 2015 as a studio version, they worked with the American soprano Christie Finn and the Ictus Ensemble under the direction of Georges-Elie Octors (* 1947) to develop an ensemble version that has already been performed several times, for example in Lille, Ghent and Antwerp . It includes works by the American composers Christopher Trapani (* 1980), Larry Polansky (* 1954) and Michael Pisaro (* 1961).

One trick pony

In 2017 Liesa van der Aa founded One Trick Pony with her sister Sarie van der Aa . It is a music laboratory for contemporary music that focuses on the visualization of music and musicians on stage, in film and outside of traditional venues.

Utopia highway

Autobahn Utopia is a work for piano, saxophone quartet and string octet with sound recordings. The music comes from Liesa van der Aa. The texts by Liesa van der Aa, Katrin Lohmann and Peter Handke . Noises from motorways, exits and entrances, traffic jams, radios, cloudbursts, overcrowded cars and other noises from traffic are played back to the musicians playing live. The work was performed by One Trick Pony at the Festival van de Archtektuur in the DeSingel walkway on September 9, 2017 . Another performance took place at the Ghent Festival 2017 as part of artbeat on Friday, October 6th, 2017 in the Eskimo factory in Ghent. You can read in the Ghent Festival program booklet. It is dreamy, energetic and rhythmic music full of hooks and sharp edges. In other words: Steve Reich's jazz becomes trash and techno .

Cargo (soundtrack)

Liesa van der Aa wrote the soundtrack for the film Cargo by Belgian director Gilles Coulier in 2017 . The music was recorded in De Singel in Antwerp. The Zerkalo string quartet played, supplemented by the double bass player Nathal Wouters. The film was presented on September 8, 2017 at the Ostend Film Festival . It was released in Belgian cinemas on September 13, 2017 by Kinepolis Film Distribution (KFD). On February 16, 2018 the CD Cargo (Original Soundtrack) was released on the De Wereldvrede label

LOO TUNES / Music for Toilets

The Konzerthaus Handelsbeurs in Ghent was one in Liesa Van der Aa toilet music in order that should be played in the in-house toilets. The opening event took place on April 28, 2017. Since then, the music has been played in the toilets there.

De Dag (24 Hours - Two Sides Of Crime)

In the 2018 television series De Dag , she played the role of television reporter Kristien Delaruelle. The series will be broadcast under the international name 24 Hours - Two Sides Of Crime from October 5, 2018 in Germany on ZDFneo . Your German voice actress on the series is Cathlen Gawlich .

Court of Choice Part I - PLAY

PLAY is the first part of a music theater triptych. It is a detailed, musical tennis match for three actors, string quartet and drums. Liesa van der Aa is responsible for the concept and the music. Nefertari Vanden Bulcke wrote the libretto. The project is a co-production by One Trick Pony , De Singel, and the Handelsbeurs Concertzaal. The work was performed on April 24th and 25th, 2019 in the De Singel theater studio and on June 22nd, 2019 in Vrijbroekpark in Mechelen as part of the De Broek festival .

easy alice

Liesa van der Aa released the album easy alice on February 28th . She released her first single Coming Home in November 2019.

Transparent.be of the Music Theater Transparent writes that Liesa van der Aa has developed into one of the most versatile performing artists of our time . She easily switches between music and acting for television, film and theater . Avant-garde , soundscape and rock meet in their music . Rudy Tollenaere writes on October 5, 2017 in the Nieuwsblad in Antwerp: If there is someone who is difficult to pigeonhole, it is Liesa van der Aa. Her creativity is indomitable , one reads in the program booklet of the Ghent Festival 2017 .
