Jantje Wilhelmina Elisabeth "Liesbeth" Spies (born April 6, 1966 in Alphen aan den Rijn , Province of South Holland ) is a Dutch politician from the Christian Democratic Appèl (CDA), who was a member of the Second Chamber of the States General for several years and was Minister from 2011 to 2012 for interior and overseas territories. Since 2014 she has been the mayor of Alphen aan den Rijn.

Life

Studies and professional career

After attending school, Liesbeth Spies began studying law and economics at the State University of Leiden in 1984 and graduated in January 1990. She then began her professional career as a consultant and project manager at Research voor Beleid BV in Leiden and was then secretary and head of the project office of the interprovincial consulting agency Interprovinciaal Overleg (IPO) until 1998 .

In 1998 she moved to the administration of the province of South Holland, where she was head of the office for environmental coordination and spatial planning and program manager for the implementation of the province's environmental and water plan until March 2002. This was followed by a position as head of the executive department of the provincial administration until May 2002. In 2002 she was for some time chairman of the CDA program commission for the election of the municipal council in Alphen aan den Rijn.

MP and Minister

Spies, who has been a member of the CDA since 1984, became a member of the Second Chamber of the States General in May 2002 and was a member of it for more than eight years until June 2010. During this time, between July 2002 and March 2007, she was initially a member of the board of directors and then until May 2010 deputy chairwoman of the CDA parliamentary group in the second chamber.

On November 1, 2010, she succeeded Henk Bleker as acting chairwoman of the CDA and held this position for almost six months before being replaced by Ruth Peetoom on April 2, 2011 .

Between March and April 2011 she was a member of Parliament ( Provinciale Staten ) of the Province of South Holland and local leader of the CDA and was followed on 27 April 2011 Member of the local provincial government ( provincial-executive ), in which it until 16 December 2011 for Space, Housing, Economy and Ports was responsible.

On December 16, 2011, Liesbeth Spies was finally appointed to the cabinet by Prime Minister Mark Rutte as Minister of the Interior and Overseas Territories . She became the successor to Piet Hein Donner , who had become Vice-Chairman of the Council of State ( Raad van State ). As minister she was responsible for the overseas autonomous regions of Aruba , Curaçao and Sint Maarten .

In 2012 she expressed her interest in the CDA's top candidacy in the parliamentary elections in September, but the party preferred Sybrand van Haersma Buma .
