Lilium formosanum ( Chinese  台灣 百合  / 台湾 百合 , Pinyin Táiwān bǎihé ) is a species from the genus of lilies ( Lilium ) in the trumpet lily section .

description

Lilium formosanum reaches a height of 120 to 150 cm. The bulbs are small, rounded and about 2 to 4 cm in diameter. They consist of white to yellowish lanceolate scales. The stem is smooth to papillae and sometimes purple. The leaves are linear or narrow and lanceolate, 2.5 to 15 cm long and 4 to 13 mm wide. They are freely distributed around the stem.

The plant blooms from June to December with one to five fragrant, funnel-shaped flowers in an umbel . The hermaphrodite flowers are threefold. The six identical bloom cladding sheets ( tepals ) are broadly spatulate and 11.5 to 14.5 cm long. The basic color of the flowers is pure white, the outside is tinged with purple. Each flower contains three carpels and six stamens. The anthers are about 10 mm long, the pollen are yellow, the filaments are very long, about 10 cm. The nectaries are green and papilose on both sides. The seeds ripen in slim 7 cm to 9 cm long seed capsules and germinate immediately and epigeously .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

distribution

The plant is endemic to Taiwan . Lilium formosanum needs a moist, but well-drained soil, it thrives best on meadows near the sea up to altitudes of 3500 m above sea level. The nominate-shaped onion can only withstand temperatures down to –3 ° C for a short time.

Naturalized occurrences exist in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi, as well as Kenya, Tanzania and Madagascar. In Australia, Hawaii and South Africa it is considered a noxious weed.

Systematics

One can differentiate between the following varieties:

  • Lilium formosanum var. Formosanum : Originally only found in Taiwan.
  • Lilium formosanum var. Microphyllum T.S.Liu & SSYing in northern Taiwan.

There is a variety which by some authors to Lilium formosanum var. Formosanum is asked:

  • Lilium formosanum var. Pricei Stoker : alpine form, height between 45 and 60 cm, one or two flowers, hardy.

In April 1982 the Polish scientist Dr. Henryk Mackiewicz discovered a lily in what was then Zaire on the Virunga volcanoes between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi, a little north of Lake Tanganyika , which he classified as a close relative of Lilium formosanum , but an independent species, and named it Lilium zairii . Further research between 1986 and 2002 supported this assumption, but formally the species was never validly described .

use

From Lilium formosanum varieties are Lilium formosanum 'Prices Variety' and Lilium formosanum 'Little Snow White' has been read. The latter has an increased virus resistance . Both cultivars are common in gardens, especially in England.
