LinEx or GNU / LinEx is a Linux distribution based on Debian . The development was initiated by the government of the Spanish region of Extremadura , which decided in April 2002 to use LinEx on all computers in schools and public administration. The project shows clear parallels to Guadalinex of the Andalusian government.

In 2013 Limex 2013, which is based on Debian, was released.

history

The regional administration of Extremadura invested 300,000 euros in LinEx and has thus been able to save 30 million euros. At the end of 2003, the initiative brought Extremadura to the fore in this field across Europe with two students per computer. By May 2003, 200,000 CDs of the distribution had been distributed free of charge in Extremadura, and another 70,000 had been downloaded. Use in business and the private sector is also actively promoted. The administration of Andalusia has been participating in the Guadalinex project since April 2003 , after it was decided there to give preference to free software in administration.

At the beginning of 2012 it became public that LinEx should not be further developed. Until then, it had become widespread in the health and education sectors, but only 1% in administration. At the end of January 2012, the plan was announced to convert all of Extremadura's administrative workstations to Linux by the end of the year.

At the beginning of 2013, the Debian- based version Linex 2013 was released, which was adapted to Spanish administrative needs, among other things. Support for people with disabilities and adjustments to the Firefox browser were part of the project. The work on Linex 2013 was carried out by the Spanish company Emergya.

features

LinEx is designed for i386 -compatible computers and contains the current, stable version of Gnome as a desktop environment , as well as some extensions.
