Lindisfarne

Lindisfarne is a suburb of Hobart in the southeast of the Australian state of Tasmania . It is located about 6 km northeast of downtown on the east bank of the Derwent River and belongs to the Clarence City Local Government Area . At the 2011 Census, 6,179 people lived here.

history

The suburb was named after Lindisferne House , a mansion that was built in the 1820s near the suburb of Rosny . From 1892 the settlement was called Beltana , but because of the risk of confusion with Bellerive , it was renamed Lindisfarne in 1903 . The namesake in this case was the tidal island Lindisferne in the sea off Northumberland in the north of England . The easternmost part of the center of Lindisfarne, where the Beltana Bowls Club and the Beltana Hotel are located, is still called Beltana by the population today .

water sports

Lindisfarne surrounds the bay of the same name, one of many similar, sheltered anchorages on the Derwent River. A number of sports clubs have settled there that deal with rowing, sailing and motor boating on the Hobart waterways.

The Motor Yacht Club of Tasmania in Lindisfarne Bay (see photo), the Lindisfarne Sailing Club and the Lindisfarne Rowing Club (the club where rowers Scott Brennan and Stephen Hawkins are active) are all located on the shore of the bay.

Sports

There is also a large sports field with playing fields - home of the Lindisfarne Blues , which plays in the Southern Tasmanian Football League (now SFL ), and the Lindisfarne Cricket Club , which plays in the Tasmanian Grade Cricket , part of the Tasmanian Cricket Association -, tennis courts - Home of the Lindisfarne Tennis Club , Beltana Bowls Club, and an ANZAC Memorial Park , all on a hill overlooking the Derwent River and Mount Wellington . In the ANZAC Memorial Park you can find a large Køkkenmøddinger of the Tasmanian Aborigines .
