Lentil stew is a stew dish. The main ingredient is lentils , which are usually cooked into a stew with soup greens , potatoes and bacon , belly meat or boiled sausage .

Lentils are one of the first vegetables to be cultivated and stews with this legume are from the ancient Babylonian kitchen around 1700  BC. Chr. Known. Early recipes for lentil stews can be found around 200  AD in late ancient Greece with Euthymus and in the 1st century AD with Roman gourmet Apicius . Compared to other foods, lentils have always been relatively inexpensive and as a result, lentil dishes were still considered "poor food" in the Middle Ages .

Lentil stews are available in India and other Asian countries, where mainly those types of lentils, such as red lentils, that are not widely used in Europe are used. In addition, the seasoning is spicy or sweet and sour. In Europe, the brown plate lenses are the most common.

Contrary to popular belief, lentils don't need to be soaked before cooking. They are after a cooking time of about 45 minutes even , in the pressure cooker , the cooking time is reduced to just 10 minutes. However, pre-soaking, which used to be common for fruits from long ago harvest, can reduce the cooking time. It was recommended to wash the lenses before use, but this is largely superfluous today as there is practically no contamination in industrially manufactured packaging. Washing is only recommended for organic goods.

In some German regions, lentils are served with sliced black pudding , additional vinegar and sugar to season to personal taste. Other common side dishes are smoked meat , Knackwurst , Bockwurst , Bregenwurst or Wiener Würstchen , but also Frankfurter . With the Swabian lentils with spaetzle , the lentils are prepared with little liquid as an addition to vegetables.

In India, a stew is widely known as dal , which is often made from lentils.
