Lisa Kaltenegger (2014)

Lisa Kaltenegger (born March 4, 1977 in Kuchl near Salzburg ) is an Austrian astronomer and astrophysicist who is engaged in the discovery and research of exoplanets , exomondes and super-earths . Since July 1, 2014, she has been Associate Professor at Cornell University and heads the Carl Sagan Institute . Before that she worked at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Heidelberg ( Germany ) and at the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Boston ( USA ).

Life and accomplishments

Lisa Kaltenegger attended the Bundesrealgymnasium in Hallein . After graduating from high school in 1995, she studied film and media studies, technical physics, astronomy , business administration with Japanese and worked as a translator . In 1999 she completed the study of astronomy with the thesis about Extrasolar planet search: formation of planets and detection methods ( Extrasolar Planet Search : formation of planets and detection methods ) at the Karl-Franzens University Graz (MSci) and in 2002 the Study of technical physics with specialization in biophysics and biomedicine with the thesis on Optical tweezers - application of optical traps in medicine and biology: a survey and feasability study ( Optical tweezers - application of optical traps in medicine and biology: a survey and feasibility study ) at the Technical University of Graz (M. Eng.). In 2004 she completed her doctorate at the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz in the field of astronomy with a dissertation on the topic of Search for extra-terrestrial planets: the darwin mission: target stars and array architectures ( search for extra-terrestrial planets: the Darwin mission: Target stars and array architectures ) with sub auspiciis .

She then worked for the European Space Agency (ESA) in the Netherlands in search of extrasolar Earth-like planets . At the age of 27, she moved to Harvard University , where she researched and taught until, in 2010, she took over the leadership of a seven-member international Emmy Noether group at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg . She is also a Research Associate ( Research Associate ) of the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and lecturer ( lecturer ) at Harvard Astrophysics Department . Since 2009 she has also for the NASA Astrobiology Institute and the Extrasolar Planet Analysis Group of NASA operates.

Kaltenegger is particularly concerned with the modeling and characterization of atmospheres around earth-like planets and their interactions with the planetary surface. By analyzing atmospheric spectral fingerprints, i. H. of the light reflected from exoplanets, indicators that suggest possible life (such as hydrogen and oxygen) are searched for. Her research group at MPIA was involved in the discovery of Kepler-62e and Kepler-62f , two planets that are in the habitable zone .

In 2014, the physicist, who is married to the Portuguese space technician Felipe Pereira, became the mother of a daughter. Since July 1, 2014, it is associate professor ( associate professor ) at the Cornell University . Since 2015 she has been the director of the Carl Sagan Institute there . She is on the scientific team of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission .

Awards

The asteroid (7734) Kaltenegger was named after Lisa Kaltenegger. In 2007 she was named one of 37 America's Young Innovators in the Arts and Sciences by Smithsonian Magazine . In 2012 she received the Heinz Maier Leibnitz Prize of the German Research Foundation, endowed with EUR 16,000 . In June 2014 she was awarded the Christian Doppler Prize 2013 by the State of Salzburg .
