List of Hamburg cinemas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of cinemas in Hamburg leads proven stationary movie theater in Hamburg on.

Cinemas that have had several names in the course of their existence are listed with the last name used. The spelling of the cinema names essentially follows the information provided by the Hamburg Film and Television Museum.

history

Since 1895 there have been kinetoscope presentations in Hamburg , but they could only be viewed by one spectator at a time. Since 1896, occasional performances of so-called living photographs have been part of the stage program of the Hamburg Hansa-Theater , as shown by a newspaper advertisement from the Hamburg Foreign Gazette of January 24, 1896. Eberhard Knopf opened the first “real” movie theater in Hamburg-St. Pauli . In the following decades the number of movie theaters increased. The number of cinemas stagnated during the Second World War, only to see a new boom in numbers in the 1950s. At the beginning of the 1960s, the Hamburg cinemas together had 90,000 seats. With the general spread of televisions in the 1960s, the cinema began to die out, and this continued over the decades following the proliferation of new media such as video, satellite television, and internet streaming services . The resulting decrease in audience numbers , combined with the emergence of rental video libraries and large cinema centers, forced many traditional houses to give up. Large cinemas and cinema centers responded by dividing large cinemas into several small box cinemas and widening the range of films on offer. Other mostly smaller houses responded by specializing in film genres outside the mainstream. At present (2020) there are about 26 cinemas in the city with 81 projection halls with 20 to 1000 seats, all cinemas together have about 17,900 seats.
