Christian Pløyen was fúti from 1830 and amtmaður in the Faroe Islands from 1837 to 1847 . He is still considered the most outstanding and popular amtmaður in the country.
From 1720 to 1948 were the Faroe Islands by a bailiff ( Faroese amtmaður [ amtmɛavʊr ], Danish : amtmand ) ruled.
There were three different terms of this office:
- 1720–1775: Officials of Iceland based in Reykjavík , who were also responsible for the Faroe Islands.
- 1776–1816: Officials of Zealand based in Copenhagen , who were also responsible for the Faroe Islands.
- 1816–1948: Officials based in Tórshavn who were only responsible for the Faroe Islands.
The direct successor to this office has been the Ríkisumboðsmaður ("Reichsombudsman") since the Faroese Autonomy Act from 1948 until today .

The seat of the Amtmaður was the so-called "Burg" ( Borgin ), or Amtmansborgin . It was the most magnificent building in Tórshavn at the time, and the Dannebrog of the Imperial Ombudsman still blows here today (photo from 1899).
