The seat of the imperial ombudsman in the Faroe Islands is the so-called amtmansborgin ("Amtmannsburg"), which was the largest and most representative building in the country at the time (photo from 1899).

The Danish imperial ombudsman in the Faroe Islands ( Faroese : ríkisumboðið í Føroyum, Danish : rigsombudet på Færøerne ) is also known as the Danish High Commissioner in the Faroe Islands . It is the representation of the Kingdom of Denmark on the largely autonomous islands in the North Atlantic .

The office of Reich Ombudsman (ríkisumboðsmaðurin, rigsombudsmanden) was awarded the Faroese Home Rule Act introduced in 1948, replacing the Governor of the Faroe Islands , the amtmaður . Since 2017, the imperial ombudsman has been headed by the imperial ombudswoman Lene Moyell Johansen , who is based in the capital Tórshavn .

Tasks and competencies

The Reichsombudsschaft is subordinate to the Danish Ministry of State (comparable to the German Federal Chancellery ).

The imperial ombudsman is the mediator between the Danish state and the Løgting with the Faroese autonomous government. He has a seat in Løgting, but only with an advisory vote, so no voting rights . All Faroese laws and other regulations must be made known to him. Conversely, he ensures that Danish law is implemented in the areas where Denmark retains sovereignty. This is for example family law and the police.

The imperial ombudsman is also the election officer in the Faroe Islands for elections to the Danish Folketing and for any referendums at the imperial level. The practical implementation of the elections is in the hands of the Faroese municipalities .

Authorities

The following institutions are under the administration of Denmark in the Faroe Islands:

  • Secretariat of the Reich Ombudsman
  • Legal system
  • Landfúti ( governor ) and police
  • 6 Sýslumenn (representative in the traditional Faroese regions, based in the local police stations)
  • Military (the Faroese part of the Arktisk Command , until 2012 the Færøernes Command )
  • Medical officer

The Kingdom of Denmark sends a total of 21 senior officials to the Faroe Islands.

Reports

The Reichsombudsschaft issues two publications:

  1. The annual report on social developments in the Faroe Islands
  2. Every two years the current register of Faroese laws, which dates back to the 17th century . PDF download (163 pages in Danish)

In addition, the Reich Ombudsman reports to the State Ministry on current political and economic developments on the archipelago.

One of the "Seven Faroese Wonders"

For Ólavsøka 2007, Faroese television Sjónvarp Føroya organized a nationwide competition on the “Seven Faroese Wonders”, in which viewers could make any suggestions about special buildings and other objects. A ranking of the eight winners (due to a tie in one case) was not disclosed, but the seat of the imperial ombudsman in the Faroe Islands, the old Amtmansborgin , is one of them. The others are the church stalls of Kirkjubøur , the Magnus Cathedral , the Christianskirkjan in Klaksvík, the House of the North , Tinganes , the Norðoyatunnilin and the first flag of the Faroe Islands in the church of Fámjin (tied vote with the seat of the imperial ombudsman).
