This list gives an overview of people who have held the office of mayor , city ​​schoolmaster or mayor in the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd .

The mayors before 1551 came from the guilds . The four first mentioned mayors from 1368 belonged to families that had exclusively occupied the council until 1344. The mayor, Hans von Horkheim, belonged to a noble commercial family who moved to the landed gentry in the 15th century. The last mayor from a gender family was Walter im Steinhaus 1409. The names of the mayors were given anachronistic nobility designations around 1500 . Hans vom Taler is known in the sources of the 14th century as Johann Burger Taler.

After the reforms of Emperor Charles V , the mayors were mayors for life from 1551 to 1802 . At that time, the city was headed by three mayors, who replaced each other every four months. After the transition to Württemberg in 1802, the Württemberg city ​​constitution was introduced, whereby a mayor was at the beginning of the city; from 1819 the office was renamed "Stadtschultheiß". Two officials, Adolph Untersee (1886) and Paul Möhler (1903), were appointed Lord Mayor by the King of Württemberg . After the end of the monarchy in 1918, the title of Lord Mayor was common.

Today the mayor of the city is directly elected by the citizens entitled to vote for a term of eight years. As head of the city, he is the representative and legal representative of the city, chairman of the municipal council and head of the city administration. He is represented by the first alderman with the official title of “First Mayor” and another alderman with the official title of “Mayor”.

Berchtolt Klebzagell was elected as the first mayor of the city in 1284 . The election of the mayor and the two assistant Stettmeister took place annually. The chronicler Paul Goldstainer recorded the list of mayors from 1368 in his Gmünder Chronik from 1549/50 .
