Ensemble Upper City of Dingolfing

The ensemble encompasses the historical area of the Upper City of the old town of Dingolfing, a fortified castle settlement from the 13th century, and the Steinweg as its connection to the Lower City. Dingolfing is located in the hill country of Lower Bavaria, on the lower Isar, on the right bank of the river.

The old Bavarian settlement of Dolgolfing, which developed at an apparently very old crossing over the Isar, was already apparent in the 7th / 8th centuries. Century by an Agilolfingischen ducal court, with the Duke Tassilo III. probably in 770 the bishops and abbots of his duchy gathered for a synod. This courtyard was located next to the oldest parish church St. Johannes, the predecessor of the existing late Gothic building.

As a result of Duke Tassilo's deposition in 788, the ducal court and church came into the possession of the Carolingians, who passed this royal estate on to the St. Emmeram monastery in Regensburg; the Regensburg bishop thus became the landlord of the settlement. This fact was decisive for the further development of a city with a special character. The Wittelsbach dukes from their neighboring territory challenged the bishop's rights to the now important town of Dingolfing and established themselves on a hill to the west, immediately above the settlement, the plateau of which Ludwig the Kelheimer is said to have already claimed around 1230.

After storming the nearby Episcopal Fortress Teisbach in 1251, they were able to assert themselves as sole lords in Dingolfing and under Duke Otto II , the actual founder of the city, built a fortified castle settlement on the heights, the Upper City. This consists of a long, courtyard-like square, following the slight curve of the high plateau, expanding from south to north. Although a ducal castle was not built in this area, there was a concentration of ducal official buildings - among them the impressive late Gothic ducal box - and of later noble houses.

This accumulation of offices and official buildings, which until 1838 also included the town hall, has remained characteristic of the Upper Town in contrast to the commercial Lower Town until the present day. The connection between the Lower and Upper Towns is established by the Steinweg, a steep lane that forks in its central part, the branches of which form narrow, picturesque entrances to the plaza of the Upper Town. The high, protective retaining and lining walls that accompany the stone path in the upper part and the so-called travel arch that spans it are reminiscent of the former self-fortification of the Upper City. The two rings only merged in the late Middle Ages; the connecting wall from the former Isartor at Bruckstraße 31 via the smith's tower to the stork tower in the north corner of the Upper City is a reminder of this union.

From the heyday of urban development in the second half of the 15th century, the Duke's box has been preserved as the most important architectural monument in the Upper City (built before 1421). Most of the older building structure was destroyed in the War of the Austrian Succession in 1743, the city walls with three of the four city gates were removed at the end of the 19th century. In the north-east corner of the Upper Town there was a Franciscan monastery at an older St. Oswald Church from 1640 until its abolition in 1802, the farm wing of which is reminiscent of the formerly larger complex that dominated the square and townscape until it was demolished in 1804.

From the fortification reinforcements of the early 17th century, the high bridge over the Asenbachgraben from 1612 has been preserved at the southern tip of the Upper City, with which a further separate access to the Upper City was created and at the same time a significant urban accent was set at this point. One disruption is the construction of the district office across all parcels, for which the former town hall has been demolished.

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
