Ensemble old town Greding
The place ( location ), first mentioned in 1064/65 in the Franconian Jura on the northern bank of the Schwarzach, rises steeply in its northern area to the Kirchberg, where a Franconian royal court was located near the late Romanesque basilica of Sankt Martin. The church probably had a previous building and was changed in the 16th century. It served as a parish church until 1727. Together with the Michael's Chapel from the 12th century, the medieval cemetery complex and the city fortifications, which surround the church and cemetery district on two sides, it dominates the image of the city, which is still largely walled and surrounded by the moat. Under the prince-bishops of Eichstätt, an urban settlement developed into an official city from the 12th century. At the intersection of the old thoroughfares leading from the east, south and west into the center of the village with the stairways to the Kirchberg, the triangular, spacious market square with the most important prince-bishop's offices, the town hall and the large inns was built, gradually reducing to the width of the street to the east and south. From a late medieval chapel at the foot of the Kirchberg, the new building of the baroque parish church emerged in 1727, with its main facade facing the market square. In contrast to the market square with the three main streets, Kindinger Straße, Bahnhofstraße and Nürnberger Straße, which are aimed at the city gate towers, the side streets are mostly loosely developed. The height of the buildings is downgraded, small gardens, barns and courtyards illustrate the historical arable bourgeois character in these areas. Georg-Jobst-Gasse forms an arch around the north side of the market square, Badergasse around its south side. The Agbach, which crosses the entire eastern half of the city in an open course, forms an ordering axis for the plots and the development of the Malergasse and the lower Georg-Jobst-Gasse in the northeastern part. The streets Am Kirchberg, Kirchbergweg and Amtsgasse open up the Kirchberg in an irregular manner, partly branching out. In these side streets, which also include Langgasse and Gripsergasse, the historical character is partly disturbed by some new buildings and vacant lots. Nevertheless, the city as a whole is still vivid thanks to the city fortifications, which were largely preserved with its three gate towers, 17 fortification towers, four remains of towers, walls and moats, which were completed under Prince-Bishop Friedrich von Öttingen (1383–1415). File number: E-5-76-122-1.
City fortifications
The almost completely preserved former city wall is partially provided with a battlement. The natural stone masonry consists largely of quarry stone. The first fortification of the urban settlement took place in the 14th century. It was renewed at the end of the 14th / beginning of the 15th century. Originally only the area around the Martinskirche was fortified. The city wall between Kirchberggasse 7 and 4 and Gripsergasse 7 and 4 is interrupted from the former church castle to the Fürstentor. Starting in the northwest, the city fortifications consist of the following parts in a clockwise direction:

Remarks
- ↑ This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
