The emergence and history of the Jewish community of Schwanenberg are to be seen not least in connection with the situation in Erkelenz, whose Jewish community, which was already occupied in the Middle Ages, was increasingly subjected to reprisals ("Jewish ordinances") from the 16th century. Schwanenberg, which belonged to the Protestant rule of Wickrath, offered a suitable refuge here. The beginnings of the Jewish community in Schwanenberg are unknown, but are assumed to be around 1600. At the end of the 18th century, around 8–9 Jewish families lived in Schwanenberg and the associated villages of Lentholt, Genhof and Grambusch; in 1812 there were 40 people. Just as the number of Jews in Erkelenz increased again in the 19th century, the number in rural Schwanenberg decreased, so that the community was barely functional by 1933. A synagogue and a burial place, the origins of which are also unknown, were located in Lentholt. In 1868 a new synagogue was inaugurated on Lindchesweg, which was destroyed in the pogroms of 1938. The cemetery in Lentholt was also used by the Erkelenz Jews until 1865 (Neusser Strasse opened). It was originally located at "Baumplatz", but had to be relocated to its current location on the Buscher Bahn in 1821 because the Prussian domain administration laid claim to the property. During National Socialism, the cemetery was devastated, then cleared and has not been used since then.

Description:

According to E. Pracht, the parcel of approx. 100 m² is located on the outskirts of Lentholt. It is enclosed on all sides with a hedge and designed as an empty lawn with a central row of trees. Two low gates give access. A memorial stone (“Jewish cemetery”) commemorates the former purpose of the property.

Monument value:

The plot shows the location and burials of the cemetery of the formerly important Jewish community of Schwanenberg, which has been located here since 1821. It is therefore important for Erkelenz. Today's memorial is appropriately designed and, as a fenced-in parcel with a memorial stone, preserves the character of a former Jewish cemetery.
